4 Day Journey - Downeast Coast

  • Roque Bluffs State Park (map)

During this 4-day sea kayak journey with Nate Hanson, we'll work together to build the skills required for multi-day kayak touring in an exposed coastal environment.  At the intersection of significant tidal flows from the inland bays and the powerful Bay of Fundy to the northeast, this area presents amazing beauty but also considerable challenges, and the goals of our trip will be to develop the skills required to safely plan and execute journeys to such remote and exposed destinations.  During 4 days on the water, we'll have opportunities to practice cockpit navigation, improve our boat handling in wind, current, and waves, and plan our travels to take advantage of tides and weather.  With 3-nights of island camping, we'll consider Leave No Trace principles, island access, wilderness cuisine, and trip planning.  The exact area of this trip will be determined based on weather, but I have my eye on the Englishman Bay and Machias Bay area, with possible inclusion of the Bold Coast if conditions are favorable.

This journey is appropriate for paddlers who are comfortable with rescues and boat-handling in 2-foot seas, 15 knots of wind, and moderate currents. Participants should be in good physical condition, and prepared to paddle up to 15 miles in a day.

This course will begin with a pre-trip planning session on Monday evening to review weather forecasts and tidal information, and to collaborate on route-planning.  Please plan to arrive in Ellsworth by 6pm on the 4th.
