Whitewater for Sea Kayakers - Penobscot River, Maine

  • Seeboomook Roll Dams Seboomook, ME, 04478 United States (map)

Great things happen when sea kayakers take to the river for whitewater training. With a great stretch of river, and beautiful wilderness camping right at the takeout, this trip is both worthwhile and really fun. We’ll return to the Seboomook Roll Dams section of the Penobscot River, giving us access to reliable water, a range of paddling challenges, and a proper North Maine Woods getaway. We’ll build skills for understanding whitewater, moving boats with finesse, and making confident moves in whitewater rivers. As with all our courses, the emphasis is on comfortable development, control, and confidence - not on chucking bodies downriver and picking up pieces at the end.

This course is appropriate for competent sea kayakers with no river experience, and for improving whitewater boaters looking to expand their abilities and safety. (Want to add a day of intro WW training in Ellsworth to get more out of this course? Contact Nate)

We’ll camp along the Penobscot River (established primitive sites, with privies/tables/fire-rings), and spend three days working in the variety of rapids in that area. There will be fun, there will be action, there will be campfires! And I know you’ll notice improvements in both your sea and river paddling after these three days!

Hosted by Nate Hanson (ACA L4 WW Instructor, L5 Sea Instructor, L4 Sea IT; British Canoeing Sea Kayak Coach).

$160 per day, plus $25/day equipment fee (Pyranha boats, Werner paddles, etc)
Camping fees ~$10 per night
Participants should plan to travel to the area on Tuesday afternoon.
